What to do during the teachers strike?
Thursday and Friday the teachers strike. And whether you agree with this or not, for many parents this means the kids are home for two extra days. Now there are amusement parks and museums that provide extra opening hours or free admission during the teachers' strike.
Teacher strike
Thursday and Friday many schools are closed, again. This means for many parents, that they have to arrange childcare, take a vacation day or give up their homework day. And what to do with the kids. Stay home for the day or just make it a fun day out.
From the week I wrote about trips we can go on during spring break, I can throw those ideas back in here in a moment.
What can we go and do during the teachers' strike?
One man's death is another man's bread and that is how many organizations, amusement parks and museums think too. They take advantage of these extra days that the children are free and make their opening hours extra long, are open extra days or they visit for free.
Extra long fun in the Tiki Pool at Duinrell
At Duinrell these two days you can enjoy the Tiki Pool extra long. Especially for all students who have a day off on the 30th and 31st due to the teachers' strike, they open the Tiki Pool doors at noon instead of 4 p.m. on these days. This means that the Tiki Pool will be open from 12:00 to 21:30 on Thursday 30 and Friday 31 January.
So 9.5 hours of slide fun in one day.
What youth films are all running
Or how about a day at the cinema? There are plenty of great kids and youth movies running at the moment, so if the weather is a bit less, this might be a nice tip. Another great idea: On January 30 and 31, the new cinema film Kruimeltje en de Strijd om de Goudmijn (Crumb and the Battle for the Gold Mine), together with Dutch cinemas, is organizing a campaign to support the Bio Holiday Resort.
On these days, 50 euro cents from every movie ticket sold goes to this charity. Look here for ticket sales. Other films currently running include:
- Frozen 2
- Spy secrets
- The Adams family
- Trouble
- Whitestar
Free entrance to the museum during the teachers' strike
During a previous strike you could also go to the Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam for free and also this time during the teachers' strike the entrance is free. As an adult companion, you may also enter for free (upon showing the child aged 4 to 17)! There are extra activities these days in the museum.
You can also enter the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam for free on Thursday and Friday during the teachers' strike. Take a look at the Tropenmuseum site for all the information.
Indoor playgrounds
My boys love trampoline jumping and so this is also something I can go do with them this day during the teachers' strike. However, you should always book in advance as there are a limited number of children allowed to dump at a time. But indoor playgrounds like Ballorig or Monkey town are also ideal for these days.
So much to do
Now there will be a lot more to do these days and of course you don't have to go, you can just stay home too. But now should I find more free outings or extra opening hours I will add to this list. And if you have any additions to this list, let us know in a comment.
